WEB CONTENT

Posted on August 19th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM

Everyone says that content is king but I felt content really is a monarch. Even though, you followed all the seo rules precisely yet if your website content is not making any sense on readers, I don’t think your website will be even in 1st page of search result. Just remember, the content is what matters the most, it is like the blood stream of the web page.

Consider the following points while moving to content part: -

  • Search engines always like fresh content
  • What do we do to get fresh content? I suggest you, create a new page for blogs on your website just like “www.ravitom.com/blogs” and post some fresh and valuable articles there frequently. Next trick is leaving an area for news in home page and update it once in a week. You may wonder about benefit of this. Let me explain. Fresh contents are just like welcome board. It informs the search engines about new content and inviting engine to crawl the page, so if you have fresh content on your page, I am sure your page will be in top of index for few days.

  • Content should be useful, specific and honest
  • In some web site I found, the way they created the site is to simply fill with some content which is not only useful but also not related to their activity. These kinds of websites won’t attract end users as well as search engines to that page. So ensure your content should always points to a specific theme and moreover it should be useful to end users.

  • Content must be search engine friendly
  • Some people thinks search engine reads whole texts which we used in the page so what they will do is they hide some keywords inside page by setting the font color same as background color or they hide that keyword. Don’t think search engine as a fourth grade student. If a search engine sees this kind of tricks on your page, it may ban your site from results. Don’t repeat the same keyword again and again in your content, search engine consider your page as spam.

  • Don’t copy contents from another website.
  • We may think that there are millions of websites hosted so if we copy some websites content nobody can trace it. It’s only a few seconds required to trace website contents. Even we can trace the web pages which copied from our websites with the help of free online tools and ask them to remove the content from their site. Search engines doest like this kind of cheating.

    VALUABLE META TAGS

    Posted on August 19th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM

    Even though we can’t see this code, it is very important. All the major search engines crawl this part with high priority, except Google that I will explain in later sessions. In the source part of your page we can see this tag in the head section. There are lots of Meta tags. In that I would like to explain about some tags which I found important.

  • Robots Meta tag
  • I already explained about robot.txt in my last post. This tag tells search engines from where it has to start crawling and which part to be ignored. If you are using robot.txt in your website no need to declare a Robot Meta tag. Those who have not uploaded robot.txt file don’t ignore this tag.

    If you want to index all the pages in your web site you can mention like this
    <meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow”/>

    If you don’t want it to be crawled, write like this<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”/>

  • Description Meta Tag
  • The text which we use in this tag will be displayed in search result page, after the title of your page. This is the place where you can write a brief description about that particular web page and try to write major keywords on starting of the description. Somewhere I read that this will boost those keywords. Don’t write one entire paragraph, here just brief it.

    As I mentioned first of these topic, texts in the Meta tag will be visible to users in search result page, so be careful coz if this tag doesn’t make any sense nobody visit your site.

    <Meta name=”description” content=” major keywords and description.” />

  • Content Type
  • This tag tells search engine the type of your page and which character set is used in your site. Then search engine can easily categories your website.

    <Meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=UTF-8″ />

  • Meta Keywords
  • This tag having very less importance in Google but still it’s a valuable place for another search engines so don’t skip this place. Fill this bucket with major keywords which you already mentioned in body part of your page. And don’t repeat the same keyword coz search engine may think your site as spam. All the keywords should be related to your web page.

    <Meta name=”keywords” content=” seo tips, free, guidelines, top, seo service, optimizing for google , yahoo, msn, guruji”>

    SEO TIPS

    Posted on August 12th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM
  • Optimize title tag
  • Title tags should be different for different pages in your web site. In some web sites I found that they were used companies name as title. For better position in search engine result just use page keywords as your title that means keywords which used in particular page can be used as title of page. I prefer 70 characters in title tag and make sure you are not repeated the words in title tag.

    e.g.: WEB DESIGNING | INTERNET MARKETING | SEO | OPTIMIZING WEB SITE

  • Title attribute and url
  • url of the page should point what the site contains. Even I did the same mistake in this page. I suggest use your major keyword as url of your website. Search engines like that.

    When we are using a link inside our page, use title attribute and make this attribute more precise about where we are pointing our links to. This attribute tells the search engines about where that particular link points to and it’s also a W3C standard for creating page reachable to disabled people.

    e.g.: <a href=http://www.ravitom/seotips/tips1.html title=”Essential Seo Tips”>SEO TIPS</a>

  • Robot text
  • We may have private files or a few files which are no where directly related to the content of the web site, but are unavoidable, and we need to block these contents to be crawled by search engines. This is where the robot.txt comes in to picture. Always keep a robot.txt file inside root folder of your web site. What’s the robot.txt? This is a simple text file to tell search engines which all the pages or folders should not be crawled. What’s the benefit? Even search engines akin to this very much coz this file help search engines while craw your web site. So to block crawling in the whole images folder, use “Disallow:/images” or to avoid crawling ‘admin’ web page “Disallow:/admin.html” in the robot.txt.

  • File Names
  • In every website you can see lot of images, web pages and media files. I suggest you to use your web page keywords as your file name or image name e.g.: instead of a1.jpeg for your logo use logo.jpeg and for web page name use seo_tips_1.html instead of index.html, even the same pattern you can use in directory names also.

  • Error Free
  • Once you finish developing web page, make sure that your web site is error free. Means avoid Syntax errors from your page not only html errors but also CSS Errors and check you have no broken links or images. There are lot of validation tools are available on net. Ensure you meet W3C standards before hosting your web pages.

    SEO Guidelines

    Posted on August 12th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM
  • Deep linking
  • If you have lot of links coming from different websites make sure all these links are not linking to single page of your web site. Means all these links concentrate on one page (usually home page), search engine consider your web site as thin site. You can expect positive impact, if other websites are connecting to different pages on your site.

  • Image Links:
  • Most of the developers knows that search engine wont crawl images in your page so what they will do is, if they use image links on navigation bar, they also include text links after image links, actually that’s not an issue but make sure that in source code first text links has to come. Because when search engine crawl the page it will follow the first link to particular page only once. They won’t follow when they find another link to the same page.

  • Swap article.
  • You may be familiar with link exchange concept but what’s the article exchange? Let me explain.
    Publish small article in other web sites but make sure that article contains your web page keywords and link back to your web page and you can also publish the article from others in your web page. Search engines consider this as high quality link.

  • Multiple Anchor Text
  • ou may have multiple inbound links to your web page and you might have used same anchor text every where, isn’t?
    Don’t use same anchor text every where. You must have different keywords for your web page so wherever you have inbound links to your page just spread out your keywords as anchor text. This will boost up your page.

  • Site Map
  • If your web site is huge, that means having more pages, just use a sitemap. We can say that the sitemap is an index of your web site not only index but also connecting all pages in your website in single place. A site map helps search engines to crawl your site very professionally with quick span of time. And while crawling, engine won’t miss out any pages on your web site too. Even site map helps the end user to reach out a particular page in your website very quickly within two clicks. Given below is a simple xml sitemap.

    <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>

    <urlset xmlns=”http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9″>

    <url>

    <loc>http://www.ravitom.110mb.com/</loc>    <!–URL –>
    <lastmod>2008-08-14</lastmod>            <!—LAST MODIFIED DATE –>
    <changefreq>monthly</changefreq>       <!—UPDATING FREQUENCY –>
    <priority>0.7</priority>
    </url>

    <url>
    <loc>http://www.ravitom.110mb.com/CssLibrary.html  </loc> <!–URL –>
    <lastmod>2008-07-10</lastmod>            <!—LAST MODIFIED DATE –>
    <changefreq>monthly</changefreq>      <!—UPDATING FREQUENCY –>
    <priority>0.7</priority>
    </url>

    </urlset> -->

    WEIGHT OF LINKS

    Posted on August 7th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM

    Links are so significant in world of web because it (hyper links) connects entire web. When search engines crawling particular page it follow the links which existing in your page. So if not more links comes to your website, search engines consider your site as non popular one and chances grow dim for your website to get high rank. So if you desire high ranks in various search engines you need a good number of reputable websites linking to your site. Reputable websites means website having high ranks in major search engines.

  • Inbound links or back links
  • Theses are links coming from outside website to yours. Little bit confused? E.g.: if www.others.com links to www.you.com (here second website is yours and first website is owned by some other people) then the link from others.com is an inbound link for your website.

  • Outbound links:
  • Links which starting from your site and ends in some other website. E.g.: In the same example link which going from others.com is outbound link for www.others.com.

  • Good back links
  • Links should be from reputable and high ranking websites because this will improve search engine ranking. But while using them make sure both web sites having same theme that means contents should be related. If it’s not it will give an inverse effect, just remove the link from the other site.

    There are lots of internet directories are available so first try to add your web site there coz search engine giving much importance to directories. E.g.: yahoo directories, DMOz, etc.

    Blogs and forums also is a good place to display your website address. It’s a better idea to keep the url of your site in somewhere in signature part. Once again ‘am reminding you that forums or blogs which shows your url should have a same theme as yours

    Writing and publishing good article on net is always a good practice to get valuable links from reputable websites. But article should be interesting enough to other web masters.

    Community Links: join in communities and post some threads contain your website URL or just reply to others post keeping your website URL on signature part.

    It is always a better idea to create different websites on same theme on different IP addresses and link them. Doing so, make sure that you have hosted websites in different IP. If you are linking sites which hosted on same IP, search engines may misunderstand you that you are cheating them then they penalize you by skipping your site.

  • Bad links
  • Links coming to your website from suspicious sites might be from link farms, spam. So if somebody linked to your page without your permission just ask them to remove the link. Lot of online free tools is available for checking links to your page

  • Anchor text
  • It is an imperative item in back links. When we are getting back links from reputable websites just check the anchor text they have used in their web page for linking to us and make sure they have used one of our keyword as anchor text. E.g.: Best SEO Tips this will boost our web page than www.ravitom.com.

    SEO FACTS -1

    Posted on August 4th, 2008 in SEO IDEAS by RAVI TOM
  • URL is the one place where you can mention your primary keyword coz all major search engines first search preference is the URL. So it is better idea to use keywords which related to your business on ur URL. Always keep in mind you have not created web sites for search engines so don’t use complicated words for customers to remember, e.g. your web sites is mainly focusing on selling Benz so you can use www.benzshowroom.co.in instead of www.tomzcars.com
  • Our next target is TITLE tag. Don’t leave this tag blank and nor do as some web masters do to scroll more content on title bar using JavaScript. Search engines not supporting JavaScript at all so don’t use JavaScript. And it won’t be fine to cross the number of characters in title bar more than 45. For instance Benz seller can write Benz cars :: lowest price :: finance available :: Bangalore:: so here we can see 5 key words.
  • Meta Description: - in many websites I have seen that this tag will be blank or contain an improper description. Search engines indexes the all key words in Meta description tag too and keep in mind that the total number of characters shouldn’t exceed 250. Oh! I forgot to tell that for getting high ranks and attracting more people to your site don’t use the keywords which are not related to your website. Algorithms which are used by search engine for crawling is high end, so engine can easily find out the deceptive keywords and punish your site. E.g. A Benz seller use keywords like actress, jobs, Britney spears, Sania Mirza in his web page for attracting more people, but search engines tend to skip these since they are not related to the web sites… So make sure the key words which you are using in your web page are related to your web page
  • Meta keyword tag: - People thinking that search engines are not crawling the Meta keyword tag will give less importance for it. But as per Google they still crawling this tag also. So use this to write keywords and this time the recommended maximum number of words are 20. So don’t forget to utilize this tag effectively.
  • Headers: - h tag, It is very interesting to know that search engines likes this tag very much and while crawling, engines giving weight to the text inside this tag. And in a page don’t use more than one h1 tag but you can use number of h2 ,h3, h4…. tags in page.
  • Bold and italics: - When we go through a site, we will notice first the words which formatted as bold and italics, so with the search engine too, they sees these words first but don’t make all the words bold or italics..Don’t try to fool search engines. For making bold use strong tag and for italics use em tag instead of b and I tags
  • Keywords at beginning: - it’s a best practice to keep master keywords/primary keywords at beginning or at the end of page or else search engines can’t memorize those keywords, (was just kidding) but search engines list these keywords at top positions.
  • Key phrases: - If you wish to use particular phrase on page just like “lowest interest rate for Benz” use the same phrase wherever you need in the page but ensure all phrase are same even don’t disorder the individual words in phrase or else engine will consider this as separate words .
  • Alt attribute: - I think all of you familiar with this attribute. Make sure that wherever you are using images on page use alt and don’t leave this without text. Because search engines can’t see graphics on your page so use alt attribute with proper description for e.g. you are using image button for getting price of particular car and in that image you written price but search engine can’t see that text on image and it will jump to next item, so you can mention alt=”getting price of Benz C class” and don’t make this lengthy one.
  • These are very basic idea for optimizing your web page for various search engines and I am focusing on those who don’t know much about SEO, So in the next blog you can expect more ideas about SEO. And I wish feedback from all of you for judge myself
